RUSSIAN RUBLE FAILS AGAIN

After what amounted to some angry phone calls, the Russian Central Bank raised interest rates 3.5% to 12.5%.

Imagine your mortgage just jumped by $350 a month and your employers by even more, all to gain a penny on the dollar that won’t last anyway.
The simple fact is that the economy is in the crapper and inflation is being lied about.
Your only real customer - China is almost as deeply in economic trouble as you are. Riddled with severe natural disasters - many of them induced by excessive man-made dams and vanity projects that hampered the management of severe flooding, China last week had a climate induced disaster of the first magnitude.
On top of the fallout of Covid lockdowns and failure to come back from it, Russia’s biggest customer barely wants its oil.
The demands of taxation, high interest rates and real-life inflation way higher than is published is crushing economic activity in Russia.
On top of that it’s reserves have fallen 85% this year - it’s running out money.
We discussed recently how buying weapons is not a sustainable economic policy and why. It fails even more completely when the only people who gain are the weapons making factory employees - and you don’t pay them. The state controls payments for weapons but criminalises non-production by independent companies if the state doesn’t pay them. The factory owners are expected to carry the cost. Until of course they can’t- but it’s still illegal not to even if they have no money.
Nobody wants to invest.
Anyone who can get their money out does. And the value of the ruble keeps going down. The markets don’t want or need rubles so who will buy them? You could raise interest rates to 25% and it won’t make anything change.
There is a choice that can restore things over time.
Withdraw and end the war. Anything less than that and nothing will ever get better.
Russia’s economy is a fantasy Putin doesn’t understand. He sees only flagship markers and headlines. The real economics can’t be ignored in the end. Governor Elvira Nabulina has juggled the economics for over a year and she can’t keep it up any longer.
Every month brings worse news. It’s isn’t going to change.

Reasons for default
fall in world oil prices;
government employment in sharing posts and powers, but not responsibility;
irresponsible budget policy, when the holes were patched at the expense of domestic loans of short-term government bonds (GKOs).
Therefore, on 17 August 1998, the government and the Central Bank declared a technical default on major debt obligations.
The state ceased to control the dollar exchange rate, which led to a steep peak in the ruble, banking, manufacturing and trade.
What happened next
the dollar soared 3-5 times;
prices rose sharply;
enterprises lost the ability to maintain the production process, buy consumables and components, and pay salaries;
bank deposits were frozen;
major banks collapsed and this led to Russians distrusting the entire banking system for years to come;
people lost their jobs and money, instantly turning into beggars with nothing to buy food with.
russia has not learnt the lessons of the 1998 default. Neither political, economic nor legal reforms were implemented. Therefore, default in this country is likely to happen again.
After all, the State Duma controlled by Putin (then communists) still prints laws without regard to the budget, and the politically weak government (as 25 years ago) is unable to resist it.
