Discussion about Russian invasion of Ukraine

Main news in my country:

Russian troops have moved into the eastern region of Ukraine, which Russia has recognised as “independent”, said the Prime Minister of NATO member Latvia. US intelligence officials confirmed that the Joe Biden administration had warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of an imminent large-scale Russian invasion. Russia is expected to invade within 48 hours, they added.

That’s old news as it was announced last night.

The trouble is my friend that’s is hard to know who to believe and there is nothing on the Polish or Ukrainian news about it.

I dunno ukpolska, I’m just hoping this will not escalate in full spread war.

Me too, I read a report today that Putin has the plan of bringing all the former Soviet countries back into the Russian Federation including Poland.

Scared me for a sec, living in Poland and you just have to put it down to media craziness otherwise you will be worried sick.

The only certain thing you can be sure of is when it happens. :frowning:

Poland has a long tradition of being occupied by other nations. The people may get all nostalgic over it.

As soon as Putin touches any NATO state then Article 5 will be brought into effect and we will have a world war…

Only when all NATO members agree to bring it into effect. There is no automatism. There was Turkish fighter jet shot down by Russian air defense over Syria and no Article 5 was brought into effect.

The joke here is actually true, apart from the nostalgic bit.

My friend’s Grandm____r spent two years in a concentration camp and because she was in the Polish army, she was arrested by the Russian occupiers and spent a further three years in prison.

She was a lucky one as many families were deported to places in the east like Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan with many dying on the way there and many escaping and trying to find their way back to Poland, with thousands dying on their journey back.

That’s right, compared to Putin the west is so weak and Putin knows that and exploits it.

Only _____ing ourselves to death as friends.

Well the West could impose sanctions causing him really trouble… The ones in effect right now are quite ridiculous. When he really invades further I hope the hardest sanctions possible will be used:

  • Kick out Russia of the SWIFT banking system
  • Forbid any high technology to be delivered to Russia and sanction the companies doing so (No more microchips, aircrafts, cars (including spare parts) and all such things for Russia anymore)
  • Revoke all landing and all fly over permissions for all Russian airlines in NATO countries.
  • Forbid the import of any Russian goods into Western markets or impose hight taxes there.

We have to hit them with sanctions worse than Iran when they really do a full invasion.

Sanctions is a double-edged swards

Well all they could do is cut os off from oil and gas. It will be more expensive but we can substitute that.

Biden says he is holding back his trump card as far as sanctions are concerned and I hate it when America assumes it is in full control of the situation.

Talking of that idiot Trump, did you see what he said yesterday? The guy is so full of crap he makes Johnson in the UK look like the Pope.

The EU should be doing more but it is involved in too many meetings discussing the situation and might come up with a solution sometime next year. :man_facepalming:

Well one thing is for sure. We can hurt them a lot more with sanctions than they can hurt us. Nowadays no Russian civilian aircraft is built without the use of western technology. Imposing sanctions on that sector and civilian air traffic will be down within a few weeks…

I think they will move a bit faster given the situation

Also at the cost of jobs on our side

Yeah but can be sure that Putin is not stupid and has known that the west will impose these sanctions and has been preparing for years to combat something like this. The Russians have created an alternative to SWIFT called SPFS which is the Russian equivalent of SWIFT and was developed by the Central Bank of Russia in 2014 and has achieved some basic financial self-sufficiency.

For many years it has been steadily isolating itself from world financing and stopping the Russian government from borrowing from overseas is irrelevant as it really doesn’t need to borrow from overseas as it has a budget surplus and its debt levels are very low.

I read this morning about the Russian banks and the sanctions are nothing and will barely affect them.
