Martyrs are dead.
Noun - a a person who is k__led because of their religious or other beliefs
Verb - To k__l (someone) because of their beliefs

Think it was meant in that sense rather than the dead thing. 
although I’ve often heard women say they’re martyrs to various things like high-heeled shoes, ironing boards, kitchen sinks. But none of them were dead. The women that is not the shoes, ironing boards or sinks.
We should probably get away from the dead thing really …
