In film photography, due to how the film is made, there is an inherent problem. Silver halide crystals, along with other chemicals, are mixed with a gelatin and layered onto the film.
With high speed films, that allow you to shoot in low light conditions, the crystals are bigger and loosely packed onto the film making them more visible in the finished print.
In low speed films, the crystals are smaller and more densely packed on the film, which makes them harder to see in prints. But, it’s these silver halide crystals, which are light sensitive, that make film photography possible.
It’s also those same crystals that cause the inherent problem in film photography. It’s called grain and shows up in the prints.
Digital photography has a similar problem, but it’s called noise. Fortunately, in digital photography, that noise can be eliminated or reduced. Noise is not a good thing, just like grain is not a good thing. That’s what you’re seeing, the elimination of that noise.
The 1st photo below is an example of extreme noise. The 2nd photo shows the removal of that noise, denoising, as it’s called. The 3rd is just a bit brighter, so you can better see the results. Which do you prefer?
The 1st image below is a straight, completely un-retouched screenshot of the exact frame I posted above from the original video. The 2nd photo is the same one I posted above. As you can clearly see, Amelie’s face, mouth, nose, eyes, everything is the same size and shape in both photos. There is no deformity and nothing is misshapen.
