You must have seen

To the Norwegians on the forum, have you ever seen this, or maybe done this yourself? It’s a great tradition.

Norway is a country in Europe…

If you ever visit, you’ll often see this scene:

There’s a restaurant.

A woman comes to the cash counter and says, “5 coffees, 1 suspended.” (“Suspended” means for someone in need.)

She pays for five coffees but takes only four cups.

Some time later…

Another man comes and says, “4 lunches, 2 suspended!”

He pays for four lunches but takes only two lunch packets.

Then another person arrives, ordering, “10 coffees, 6 suspended!!”

He pays for ten but takes only four coffees.

Some time later…

An old man in tattered clothes comes to the counter and asks,

“Any suspended coffee?”

The girl at the counter says, “Yes!!” and hands him a cup of hot coffee.

A little later, a bearded man enters and asks,

“Any suspended lunch?”

The person at the counter gives him a parcel of hot food and a bottle of water.

And this cycle continues…

One group pays extra, and another group takes food without paying, all day long.

This means helping an unknown poor or needy person without revealing your identity or knowing their face.

This is a tradition of the people of Norway!!!

Start this tradition in your country , too.

Being one of these, even a slightly elderly one, I must admit I’ve never heard of this. My guess is that it’s only a select few cafes/restaurants doing this, and a quick internet search tell that there’s 14 cafes in Norway offering “suspended coffees”.

Furthernore, it seems this is a tradition started in Naples (Napoli) in Italy, and has spread to several countries around the world. So whether it’s a Norwegian tradition, I’m not so sure.

Anyways, it is a great idea, well worth looking further into and share with others!

Seems this tradidition exists in several countries. It’s probably sometimes started independently, other times inspired by other countries. Italy is most often cited as the place it started. It’s a fine idea anyway.
