Very interesting. An old accountant told me that saying decades ago (I heard, years later, he was imprisoned for embezzlement). He said it a bit differently, though. He said, “You don’t ask, you don’t get.” I’ve never forgotten it and made it one of the mottos I try to live by.

In my M____r tongue we normally say … “vra is vry, maar die weier daarby” … translated into… you are free to ask, but i am free to refuse (your request …)
