Here’s one to the memory of the American singer and songwriter Fred Neil (1936-2001), who was born 90 years ago today. He is a sadly under appreciated artist, who was one of the pioneers on the folk scene in New York at the start of the 1960’s. He helped several young aspiring artists when they arrived in New York, among others Bob Dylan and David Crosby.
Fred Neil is probably best known for the song Everybody’s Talkin’. Harry Nilsson’s version was the theme song in the 1969 Oscar winning movie Midnight Cowboy, starring Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman. I’ve posted Fred’s original version before, so to celebrate his memory, here’s a couple of other songs by him ![]()
Fred Neil - That’s the Bag I’m In (1966)
Fred Neil - Bleecker & MacDougal (1965)
For a little more, excatly two years ago I posted this…
When I do a little research for my posts here, some surprises show up. It turns out the Jefferson Airplane song The Ballad of You & Me & Pooneil is about Fred Neil. “Pooneil” was Grace Slick’s nickname for Fred Neil, because she thought he looked like Winnie the Pooh ![]()
Classic Airplane, so I might as well share it while we’re at it ![]()
