I’d like to pay tribute to the English guitarist Mick Abrahams, who passed away yesterday at the age of 82. He is probably best known as the guitarist on the first Jethro Tull album This Was (1968). Due to disagreement with Ian Anderson about the band’s direction, he left Tull after only one album, and went on to form Blodwyn Pig. This band released two albums (1969 and 1970) before they split, both made the top 10 in the UK album charts. Tull’s debut also got into the top 10, so Mick Abrahams started his recording career as guitarist on three top 10 albums!

Blodwyn Pig - Sing Me A Song That I Know

When Blodwyn Pig split, Mick Abrahams formed the Mick Abrahams Band, who also made two albums. After their split, Mick Abrahams’ been busy releasing 16 low key solo albums, and seven albums with a reformed Blodwyn Pig between 1993 and 2013. All this along with concerts and some ordinary work in between.

In the early 1990’s Mick Abrahams formed the band This Was Band together with Glenn Cornick and Clive Bunker, the bassist and drummer on the first Jethro Tull album. They performed live with old Tull songs. Apparently Ian Anderson didn’t mind at all, he even joined them live on a few occasions.

In 2008 Mick Abrahams suffered a heart attack, and struggled with his health after that. There has been a couple of albums with him on them since then, but now it is definitely over. I raise my glass to yet another almost forgotten musician, and make sure he at least gets a mention in our topic here on the forum. Thank you for the music Mick, may you be remembered :wine_glass:

Now a little trivia to hang on to my post above. When Mick Abrahams left Jethro Tull in 1968, he was replaced by the guitarist Tony Iommi from the band Earth. He didn’t quite fit into Tull, and left after a couple of months to rejoin his former band mates.

Martin Barre replaced Tony Iommi in Tull, and Earth changed their name to Black Sabbath. So there you have it, a little trivia about two of the biggest bands in rock history.

Lucky for us, there is a video of Jethro Tull with Tony Iommi playng guitar. It’s from the Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus event, put together bt the Rolling Stones in December 1968, shortly before Tony Iommi quit Tull.

The Rolling Stones - Tumbling Dice (live 1981)

Been listening a little extra to the Stones the past few days, due to reasons a few post above. Yes, down memory lane. And I came upon this excellent version of one of their classics.

Rumuor has it that Keith is not doing well at the moment. We do joke about him, the oldest person alive. But still, of course we know he’s human. So let’s send our best thoughts to Keith :wine_glass:

Yes, Keith Richards is in poor health, mainly due to
Arthritis in his fingers, which affects his mobility and led to the cancellation of the planned Rolling Stones tour in 2026; he describes the arthritis as a “benign form”, but it forces him to adapt his guitar playing.

Let’s hope he gets better soon!

I’m not sure what AI will do with music in the future. With completely new tracks, I have my doubts about whether it’s a good trend.

But when it comes to remakes… amazing works are being created.
