I once took a date for dinner in the village near UCLA. We went to a Mexican restaurant and I tried to impress her by ordering in Spanish. I said the same thing three times and was getting upset that the waiter wouldnāt write it down.
I meant to order chicken and rice (arroz con pollo).
I kept saying pollo y zapatos. (chicken and shoes) 
I found out later my date was fluent in Spanish. She and I never had a second date.
When I was living in LA I was scolded by a Latin grandma for not knowing Spanish
