That can’t be an excuse for everything the soldiers do though. If they are asked to commit war crimes, they will be held responsible for their actions whether they were just taking orders or not.
I have heard stories of Russian soldiers crying and sabotaging their own equipment in the field, because of the things they have been ordered to do! and their families protesting against the Russian government because of the horrible things being done!

At times like these, I remember a very good friend of mine. all his c___dhood he dreamed of being a military man, defending the borders of the state, being an example and the pride of people, like many boys of his time. at the age of 18 he went to the military enlistment office, served, went to study at the military academy. he was a romantic, but he was first sent to fight first in the first Chechen war, then in the second war, and when he could no longer endure all the horrors and orders of his superiors, he was simply brought to trial and now he is practically at the very bottom. was he a bad person? definitely not, he was one of the best and kindest people I have ever seen. could you be a different person? it seems to me that no. he was born a warrior. why did I say this? There are people for whom a certain craft is their meaning of life. who they were originally born and who they were supposed to die.

If the war begins thereafter, there is no way back for the individual, unless medical reason or facing drastic sanctions.

The regular soldier has no decision to make, obey the orders or be shot on the spot by the commanding officers! Which I understand has happened to many of the Russian men in Ukraine recently!
