Yes, this doesn’t work in every language. For us here, smoking is not just smoking, but also a word for the clothing, which in English is called tuxedo.
The term comes from the time when men in suits met in smoking clubs

Well I am familiar with the more complete (and correct in English) term ‘smoking jacket’ traditionally worn by ‘well to do’ country gentlemen…
