To late

Greenland was “discovered” in the European sense by the Viking Eirik the Red around 982, who founded the Norse settlements after being exiled from Iceland, but it was Gunnbjørn Ulvsson who first observed the island around 876. Eirik the Red named the country Greenland to entice people to colonize it, and organized the first major expeditions for settlement.

Notable people:
Gunnbjørn Ulvsson: First known European to see Greenland, but did not land.
Eirik the Red: Established the Norse colonies (Austerbygd and Vesterbygd) from around 985, and is credited with giving the island the name Greenland.
Leif Eiriksson: Eirik the Red’s son, who later explored Vinland (North America) via Greenland around 1000.
Timeline:
~876: Gunnbjørn Ulvsson first sees the island.
~982: Eirik the Red discovers the habitable parts of Greenland during his exile.
~985: Eirik the Red leads a large colonization expedition from Iceland, establishing the Norse settlements.
