in the beginning we had three digits, then a 1 came in front, later 2 digits again and an area code
for calling abroad you first got an operator on the line who had to change plugs

My mother was a phone operator for years when I was a kid, although I never got to see how she operated (no pun intended). She used those plugs on a large panel of holes to plug them into. Something similar to these I guess.
