“Unfriendly” World Games: Russia has come up with an alternative to the Olympics
Russia is planning to organise its own games due to the lack of admission to the main sporting events of the quadrennium.
We tell @Pravda_Gerashchenko readers about another “Potemkin village” of the Russian propaganda machine.
Sport has been an important element of state propaganda for dictatorial regimes since the time of Hitler. The Winter Olympics in Sochi and the 2018 FIFA World Cup demonstrated that it is also very important for Putin to show the “power” of the state through the organisation of global sports competitions.
Since Russian athletes got the ban at the 2024 Olympics, the rf came up with an alternative. The cynical name of the competitions should also be noted. The country that started a war of aggression and became a pariah is going to hold the “World Friendship Games”.
What kind of competition
It is stated that the Games are to be held from 15 to 29 September 2024. The programme includes 27 sports, both Olympic (basketball, athletics, rhythmic gymnastics) and non-Olympic (beach football, breaking).
The competitions are planned to be held in Moscow and Yekaterinburg. They will cost 8.3 billion rubles ($90 million), of which 3.3 billion will be allocated from the federal and regional budgets.
It is not yet known which countries will take part. But russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin had the nerve to say that Ukrainian athletes will also be invited to the Games.
Not the first “friendship”
The idea of an alternative Olympics is not new to Moscow. In 1984, the USSR boycotted the Olympic Games in Los Angeles and with its satellites (Bulgaria, Hungary, GDR, DPRK, DPRK, Cuba, Mongolia, Poland, Czechoslovakia) organised a competition called “Friendship-84”.
