Magawa was a male giant hamster rat who served as a mine detector in Cambodia. He was awarded the PDSA Gold Medal in 2020.
Magawa detected a total of 71 landmines in Cambodia and helped defuse 38 unexploded ordnance. Together with other animals, he searched an area of more than 225,000 square meters. Measuring 70 cm in length and weighing 1.2 kg, Magawa was too light to trigger the mines himself and was therefore able to alert deminers to their presence. It took him about 20 minutes to cover an area the size of a tennis court. A deminer using a metal detector would need 1–4 days to cover the same area.
P.S.: According to media reports, he died of natural causes in 2022. R.I.P.
